Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a type of antihistamine that inhibits histamine by blocking H1 receptors. This results in a reduction and prevention of swelling and itchiness. It has little to no effect on heart rate or stomach acid secretion. It is primarily used to treat the symptoms of itchiness in atopic (allergic) animals as well as with insect bites and drug reactions.
